The Derby boys’ soccer team went up against the Saint Paul boys’ soccer team on Tuesday, September 20 at 6:00 pm at home. The Derby team lost 5-0 but held a strong defense and played with a lot of heart.

The team started off strong but had some disadvantages: most of the players on the Derby soccer team were shorter than the Saint Paul players. On the contrary, Coach Liovy, the boy’s soccer team coach thought the game would be a fair match as he said, “It’s gonna be a pretty fair game considering the fact that we both have the same amount of stats, so it’s gonna be a well-balanced game.”

The coach’s plan for victory was holding on defense and counter-attacking. He told the Raider Press, “We’ll do our best to contain on defense and maybe counterattack as soon as possible and try to score.” Once defeated, the players seemed to think the problem was the passing. When asked why he thought the game went wrong, player 27, Juanito Gomez ’26 said, “I’ll say the passing… they had to pass it back a little, they can’t just throw it high up and expect them to get it as quick.”

Towards the end of the game, it got dark and started drizzling, which made it difficult for the players to run back and forth and to see in general. Some players were injured and could not play throughout the whole game. Other players got hurt during the game but pushed through it until the end of the game. Even though the team lost, the audience was very cheerful and there was much chanting.
