I am the type of person who rewatches shows and movies and does not really try new things. I don’t like wasting my time, so with my reviews, I want to give people an inside scoop on whether a show is good or not. A show I recently watched, Dynasty (the new version), aired in 2017 and it was absolutely worth every second I spent watching it.
The Dynasty reboot follows the life of a rich family, the Carringtons, who are in a feud with another rich family, the Colbys. This show contains a lot of the glitz and gloss of extreme wealth while also exposing the dark truth of corruption in the world. The story is told primarily through the eyes of Fallon Carrington, billionaire, Blake Carrington’s daughter. Blake Carrington gets married to Crystal Jennings and the story follows her life as a Hispanic woman marrying into one of the richest families in America.
Dynasty is a reboot of the original show by the same name released in 1981. I first got interested in watching this show because I heard Liz Gillies was in it, and I love her acting. Liz Gillies was previously on Victorious when she was 17 years old, she also sang on that show. This was obvious when watching Dynasty. Her voice sounded well-practiced and experienced. I quickly got engaged in the whole show as I watched each episode; especially because every episode of this show had a cliff-hanging ending that makes you want to keep watching. There was a lot of singing in this reboot and was more musical than the original version.
The show has a very good cast. Every actor fit their character perfectly and I didn’t see any problem with the acting; it was, in fact, very good. Fallon is very snarky, sassy, and classy. I think Gillies did amazing in conveying these traits because she herself is very similar to Fallon. Similarly, Ana Brenda Contreras has worked in many Mexican soap operas before, and this experience gave the role of Crystal more emotion and made the chemistry between her and her husband Blake much more believable.
However, even with the phenomenal acting, the show did have some episodes that weren’t as interesting or engaging as others. A recurring problem the show seemed to have was casting actors to last in the roles. Over 5 seasons, the role of Alexis (Fallon’s mother) was played by two different actresses, Elaine Hendrix and Nicollette Sheridan. Kristal Jennings was also played by two actresses, Ana Brenda Contreras and Daniella Alonso. This, however, did not take away from the overall storyline and the acting since all actresses did a great job playing the roles.
I really enjoyed every second I spent watching this show. I give it 9 out of 10 burritos.
