Earlier this year, the school administration made a decision to add an advisory period every day for the remainder of the school year. Advisory occurs after third period. Students move from their period three class to meet in their assigned advisory rooms. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays are study days. Tuesday is a career and readiness day and Thursday is a club day.

This decision was made to give students more time to complete assignments as well as time for clubs and college and career readiness. Freshman English teacher Cara Rice said, “I think that it’s really great that all students in this school have a chance to make up work and have a study period.”  Jan Brito ’24 said, “I think that most people overreact. They say it (advisory) is a waste of time but most students have missing assignments and advisory is a great period to get things done.”  DHS principal Jen Olson also commented, “We really wanted to give all students an opportunity to do what they need to do and catch up on their work or if they did not have any access to a study hall or access to teachers for extra help.”

This decision was made by the administration over the summer. The flexibility and student-centeredness of advisory make it largely well-received by staff with a mixed reaction amongst students.
