Have you ever woken up late and missed your bus, caught a cold, or experienced something that prohibited you from attending school? If so, you no longer need to worry; Derby High school has introduced remote learning for students who aren’t able to attend for the day. Your dog no longer needs to eat your homework because John Stanley is here to help!
Stanley was very thankful for the opportunity to come to our school and lend a helping hand. Stanley helps students stay in touch with their teachers and assists them with work they may need help with. He describes the students he works with as “Good students who want to do the right thing and get their work done, but sometimes miss or get behind”, and he applauds the extra effort they have to make to try and catch up.
Stanley has always wanted to be a teacher. He received his masters at UConn for his undergraduate degree in English, and Sacred Heart for his masters. While he was in school, his favorite subjects were English and science. He enjoys reading and writing , and also just knowing how things work.
Outside of work, he spends time playing ‘Minecraft’ with his nephew. He also enjoys listening to Lil Wayne and a variety of other hip hop stars. He explains that this kind of music exposes a drive and hunger in the artists. “I go to that kind of music to be inspired, to back up things I believe about myself”
He believes a teacher’s personality does affect their success and he believes that “You have to work on your personality and change it if you have to in order to be more successful .You can’t just go and be who you want to be all the time because that’s not how life is.”
Stanley’s favorite part about working at DHS is the environment. He likes the way his students and his coworkers interact with him. While giving him an interview, a student was in need of help with a class, so he politely asked the student to explain what was going on and helped her with a solution. Watching this interaction made me smile; he’s a good communicator and always ready to help. He enjoys this environment but he also contributes to it and does a very good job at it.
You can find him located in the room diagonal to the main office, and if you aren’t in person, you can send him a quick email at jstanley@derbyps.org . Welcome to our new addition , Mr. Stanley.
