DHS kicked off their 2022 Thanksgiving break with a raucous staff vs. students pep rally in the gymnasium. Staff wore red and the students wore black.
Every year, DHS does a staff vs. students pep rally, and every year the staff seem to win. If you ask students, a majority of them would say these pep rallies are rigged so the teachers can win. From the staff perspective, the students just need to raise their game.
This event was started because Rebecca Bell, instructional coach and student council advisor, along with Eric O’Toole, former P.E. and health teacher at DHS, wanted more student participants involved in the pep rallies. Ever since the first one, many students have continued to request similar events.
The tension between the staff and students was palpable as soon as you walked into the gym. All of the students were loudly cheering for their teams. The calm and cool staff didn’t seem to be as hyped as the students, but during this pep rally everyone in the gym showed school spirit by wearing their assigned colors and adding to their outfits with accessories and paint.
During this pep rally there were many mini-games such as basketball, trivia, and tug-of-war. During the first round of tug-of-war, a crowd favorite, the students lost and seemed to need an extra hand. They decided to call Giovanni Vicens ‘23 to help them out. Vicens gave them a little extra strength, but students still sadly lost.
Hopefully, we continue these amazing staff vs. student events because they bring students and teachers together and overall bring joy to the school.
