Derby High School recently hosted its first Family Feud-style show on March 16th, 2023. It was held from 6-8 PM in the high school’s auditorium. Multiple teams participated in this competition, running against other groups and teachers. Each ticket to participate was 2 dollars, and so was each ticket for the raffle.
The school’s National Honors Society, or the NHS, alongside school teacher Richard Abelli, hosted this show — with all profit going towards the Derby Public Library.
It lasted a few hours with one team coming out as the victors. The team ‘The Rizzlers,’ which consisted of Sophie Mraz ‘26, Sofia Rudus ‘26, Tre’vion Jackson ‘26, and Ms.Shea came out on top at the end of the night.
When asked about the team name, The Rizzlers, Sophia Rudus ‘26 said, “We were just joking around and then I just put it down; The Rizzlers. They were joking, and I was like ‘no, I’m going to do it.” And it is the name they kept, and the name they won with. The results were positive and the team had a lot of fun according to both Jennifer Shea and Sophia.
According to Shea, a science teacher at Derby High school, she was originally not meant to play but joined at the last moment when a team member could not make it. Luckily, it was a success. “We scored enough points to win the entire game. I had fun and the students were excited to win the game show.” Shea agreed, continuing about the audience, “The energy from the crowd was great, they cheered each team on.”
The night was a lot of fun, and it is a memory that will most likely end up being remembered. People hope to see this competition became an annual event. Maybe next time the stakes will be higher!
