The Derby High School’s softball team, coached by physical education teacher Carlin Ali has had a bit of a tough beginning, but the girls are dedicated to bettering their skills and paving the way for those who are new and carrying on with the seasons in the future.
Ali has been a coach for 11 years, 11 for softball, 5 for basketball, 3 for volleyball, and 1 for soccer
“Coaching allows me to help students learn lifestyle characteristics in sports.”
Derby High School’s softball team has girls at all different levels of the game, some only beginning this year and others since they were very young.
“I played softball as a little girl, and then again during middle school up to now.” – Jamie Orazietti ‘24
“I began playing softball last year.” – Ashe Clarke ‘24
Each team member seems proud to be on the team. They are all supportive of one another and look forward to their games to see their improvement and areas they need to improve on.
“I have seen the most growth in Brianna. She has grown as our 3rd basemen and continues to grow every day. Not only in the infield, but in the hitting too.” – Jamie Orazietti ‘24
The girls take notice of those who are improving and cheer them on as they grow. Haven Clarke’ 24 is a new member this year and because of her peers, she has been able to upgrade her skills.
Being able to see the strengths in others is a strength within itself.
Ali is very proud of the girls and all they have accomplished thus far. Ali was asked to use one word to describe the team and she said
“Enthusiastic!” with a smile.
Each of these girls has their idea when it comes to feeling accomplished. I asked during what game they felt most accomplished.
“Being on the softball team means staying positive even if we’re having a hard time and knowing we can do well if we keep trying.” – Haven Clarke 24
Ali feels confident and is content with the results of this season and the later coming seasons.
“I’m excited because they are on track to win more than they did last year and we hope to make states next year”
You can tell how proud and dedicated she is to help the girls strive and become better than ever
The Derby High’s softball team is filled with dedication, teamwork, and determination with not only help from the coaches but from themselves. Each of the players can describe growth in themselves or a teammate of theirs which shows positive sportsmanship and support. Even if you aren’t a fan of the sport, watching the new girls share the field and celebrate amongst each other is an exciting moment to experience.
If you can attend one of their games it is highly suggested. Support from their community can help continue to motivate and influence them to keep the confidence needed to do as well as they are destined to.
