DHS baseball makes it to states

This year’s DHS baseball team has accomplished many of their goals set out at the beginning of the year and one of them is making states which hasn’t been done in 8 years.

Recently, the team made it to the state championships, an amazing accomplishment. “It was one of our goals when the year started. Now that we have accomplished our goal, we look forward to having some extra baseball and competing on Tuesday,” says head coach Robert Swierbitowicz.

The baseball team making states has been a hot topic around the school and town and the boys are very excited and deserve this experience. Swierbitowicz says, “I am very happy to be a part of such a great group of coaches, support staff, team parents, and baseball players. This group of kids are special. From day one they worked together, kept a positive attitude, and always put forth 100% effort.”

Two big stand-out players this season were captains Ryan Slack ’23 and Max Netto ‘24 . Swierbitowicz acknowledges them by stating there outstanding performance and practice, “not alone just batting average and performance, but leadership in the locker room, leadership in the field, and leadership outside.”

Sweribitowicz’s preferred traits for his athletes now and for the future are “attitude and effort because those are two things that only they can control.”

A “humongous highlight” of the season, Coach Sweirbitowicz states, was the team getting the opportunity to play at Dunkin Donuts Park, located in the heart of downtown Hartford, Connecticut. “That was a big publicized game that Derby had and we were able to go play at a major league stadium where AA Affiliate, Colorado Rockies play,” said Sweirbitowicz.

Coach Swerib and the team are looking forward to continuing their goals for the future and a strong season next year.
