Derby High School students have the opportunity to participate in field trips through different classes at various times throughout the year. The purpose of field trips is to allow students to get out of the building and explore new traditions and expand their horizons. For some, this is a rare glimpse of life outside of Derby. The trips can be in our backyard at Osbornedale State Park or Broadway to watch a show.

The Raider Press recently spoke with principal Jen Olson about her opinion on field trips. Here is a glimpse into that conversation.

Horatio Glover: Why are field trips important for the students at Derby High School?

Jen Olson: It’s important for kids to have the chance to explore outside of Derby and outside of our school.

HG: What are the purposes of the field trips? Are they all about entertainment or strictly job/school related?

JO: There are a variety of trips. Our school counselors are focusing on getting kids on college campuses so they can meet with admission reps and tours. Other trips are targeted around a specific job/career cluster.

HG: Are school counselors the only people able to plan trips?

JO: Teachers, school counselors, school administration, student council, clubs, and our athletic director, but anyone has the ability to suggest a field trip even students.

HG:  Do the trips go through you for approval.

JO: Every trip does have to get approved by me. Then it goes to the superintendent for approval. If the trip goes anywhere outside of Connecticut it has to be approved by the board of education.

Overall, field trips are a main part of the Derby High School culture. These field trips provide the students with the ability to explore job careers and colleges. Derby High School will be patiently waiting for more fun and adventure on field trips in the near future.
