Students at DHS would benefit from longer breaks

At DHS, the school breaks throughout the year range from five days to one week (primarily one every season) with a numbered amount of public holidays off. Some students at DHS feel our breaks and days off are long enough (or appropriately numbered). While other students think the amount of school days off should be more. With longer breaks, the DHS community can get more breathing space from the stress that comes with school. With large amounts of work and sports practice everyday, students would benefit greatly from extra days off. Students and staff at DHS will have more time to rest physically and mentally.

In an interview with student Aeriana Smith ‘25, she stated, “I don’t think that they’re long enough. I believe that we need more breaks, and also we don’t get every holiday off that other schools do.’’ As our breaks are 5 days to a week, I strongly agree with this statement.  Student Julissa Flores ‘25 also has a similar opinion. She stated, “We definitely should get special holidays off because other schools do too, especially for people who celebrate these holidays.” For instance, we did not get Yom Kippur off recently, but other schools did. Students who do celebrate will not have to worry about catching up when they miss school.

However, DHS student Edens Philogene ‘24 has a different say on this topic. He stated, “I feel like our breaks are nice enough to where we have enough time to rest and come back full of energy.”

Philogene also acknowledged that if we had longer breaks, the school year would probably go longer into the summer, thereby shortening summer vacation. While the breaks are long enough for some, they are not long enough for all. Our breaks are not as long compared to other schools around the state. For example, us students should get more time to physically and mentally recollect ourselves. Although the DHS community doesn’t have a say on how long we get off we can still hope the district lengthens our breaks in the future.
