Cookies taken away; students crumbling

‘’I’m really upset.’’ ‘’They should bring them back.’’ ‘’I feel really sad, I used to buy cookies everyday.’’  These are just a few complaints from DHS students about the removal of cookies during the lunch periods. Around a quarter of the way through Derby’s school year, one of its favorite snacks was pulled from the cafeteria. This has left both students and staff pondering why and for what reason. Derby’s cafeteria sells all type of snacks during its two lunch waves ranging from water to various types of chips, and occasionally giving out free sweet treats on Fridays. However, the one that garnered the most attention was the cookies. Flavors ranged from M&M and chocolate chip to sugar. Each pack had three cookies for the price of just one dollar, which was very hard to pass up on. Following the disappearance of the cookies, The Raider Press launched their own investigation on why the cookies have disappeared.

Derby Director of Food Services Salvatore Giannotti explains, “That company, Bonzers, they don’t make anymore. I can’t get them anymore through Thurston, my distributor, because they have to be whole grain cookies. We even had a taste-test thing. This was a few years, ago and we had you guys taste them, and we picked that Bonzers cookie.’’ The food company Bonzers is a company that sells baked goods like cookies and bread. The company started back in 1987 and has been selling cookie dough for over 30 years. Since regulation now says the cookies have to be whole grain it’s very had for Giannotti to get ones that are at least 51% whole grain and still taste good.

Ultimately the cookies as of now will be taking a hiatus, but all hope is not lost as Giannotti said that, ‘’There are some other ones I could try. If you guys like them, we could try them,’’ alluding to the possibility of reintroducing cookies.
