“I thought that I was dreamin’ when you said you love me, the start of nothin.” These are lyrics from Frank Ocean’s song “Ivy” featured on his album Blonde. In “Ivy,” Frank reflects on a failed relationship and the mistakes he made. The lyric “the start of nothing” implies the innocence of the relationship and how it didn’t last long. “Ivy” explores the beauty and pain of falling in love and is just one example of how Blonde is such a complex album with deep meaning. Ocean’s lyrics leave listeners with a warm and comforting feeling. This album’s complexity leaves listeners with their own make self-interpretations allowing Ocean’s fans to connect with him on an emotional level.
In 2016, Frank Ocean released his second studio album Blonde. The album’s title is stylized as “Blonde” on the cover but is referred to as “Blond” on Apple Music and other platforms. The title plays with gendered language in French, adding to the album’s theme of self-exploration. In French “blond” is masculine and is used to describe men or boys with light hair, while “blonde” is feminine and is used to describe women or girls with light hair, fair skin, and light eyes. This dual spelling is said to reflect themes of self-expression and ambiguity within the album. In the album cover, Frank Ocean’s hair is green which represents how he defies norms and expresses individuality. It visually represents the album’s themes of identity and freedom.
Throughout the 17 tracks on the album, Ocean shares a personal look from when he was just a teenager. Listening to this album gives the listener a nostalgic feeling as Ocean reminisces on navigating through rocky relationships, friendships, drugs, and heartbreaks as a teen. In Blonde, Ocean shares an experience in each song exploring different themes.
This album gives you a warm and comforting feeling while listening. Oceans change his tone of voice on some tracks to represent his emotions. In other tracks, he makes his voice high-pitched to represent the adolescent mentality he had at the time. Listening to this album on a smooth car ride will send you into deep introspection and emotions as you reminisce about the past.
Identity and self-exploration are one of the constant themes in the album. Ocean asks questions about his own identity, self-discovery, authenticity, and self-expression throughout Blonde. The lyrics are introspective making the listeners interpret their meaning and reflect on their own lives.
For example in “Nikes,” Ocean addresses topics such as materialism, love, sexuality, and personal reflection. The song opens with a reference to materialism and consumer culture, with Ocean reflecting on the appeal of wealth and luxury: “These b*** want Nikes, they looking for a check / Tell ’em it ain’t likely.” As the song progresses, Ocean dives deeper into themes of identity and self-exploration. He reflects on his own experiences and struggles, touching on issues such as love, heartbreak, and self-doubt. Throughout “Nikes,” Ocean deals with questions of authenticity and self-expression.
