On Monday, September 30th, the Derby Red Raiders girls soccer team walked off the field with their first victory of the season over at Amistad High School.

The girls struggled with a rocky start to the season but finally triumphed with a 6-0 win against the Amistad Wolverines. It’s been a tough season for the girls with a current record of 7 losses, but they officially have a win under their belts. When asked how the girls feel about their win, Fantasy Aponte ‘28 remarked, “It felt really good to be on the other side for once,” and Sophie Mraz ‘26 answered, “It feels great knowing that we are capable of winning, I’m so happy.”

Coach Shawn Tait said, “This is the game we’ve been preparing for all season.” It is Tait’s first season in the program. The girls have been practicing almost every day since July, trying different formations and techniques to figure out what is working and what isn’t, and it seems their hard work has finally begun to pay off. While the team did not play to the best of their abilities, this is definitely a step in the right direction! Captain Brianna Quiles ‘25 scored three goals, Roujda Mekael ‘27 scored two, and Brianna Fernandez ‘28 scored one. Tait added, “It is Coach Meg and myself’s first win as coaches of the Derby program so we’re very excited to continue growing the program and eager to earn more wins down the line!”
