As the school year begins, Derby High School has several new teachers joining the school community. They bring fresh ideas and energy that will enhance our classrooms. John Stanley, a remote ELA teacher at the school for three years, has officially started a new role as an ELL teacher. Since he started teaching at DHS, he believes he has become better at teaching students as a whole. DHS is the first ever school he has taught at. He loves the connections he makes with his students and says, “For ELL specifically, the population grew a little bit as far as ELL students but not as much as you think.” He is looking forward to seeing students engage in extracurricular activities.

The new history teacher Michael Einig, who grew up in the area, is excited to teach both U.S. history and world history. He wants to aim towards making his students love history and learn about the past. He says “I enjoy teaching the students, everyone is nice and friendly here.” After moving from middle school to now teaching high school, he is eager to hear students’ favorite topics about what he has been teaching.

The new Spanish I teacher Oriana Camacho said, “I wanted to be the kind of teacher that my sister, who has ADHD, and I needed when we were in school but didn’t have. I wanted to create an inclusive environment where all students feel understood and supported.” She wants to create strong relationships with students during her teaching times. She noticed that everyone and their peers here have a strong relationship with each other, and everyone has treated her with kindness and respect.
The majority of these teachers found out that the difference between DHS and the previous ones they taught at is that there is a significant difference in how everyone treats them here. Everyone is amiable and make them feel welcome.
