On Saturday October 12th, Derby High School put on a well-attended homecoming dance following their annual spirit week, and for the first time ever a homecoming court was elected. Homecoming court is something fun the student council has wanted to bring to the school for a couple of years now, and the student council decided on this year to begin this fun tradition.
Freshman, sophomores, and juniors elected one princess and prince each. The senior class had a king and queen title up for grabs. The freshman elected Fantasy Aponte ‘28 and Clayton Garrett ‘28 as their prince and princess. The sophomore class elected Keniel Moya ‘27 and Sophia Chajchic ‘27 for their prince and princess. Lastly for the juniors prince and princess, they elected Horatio Glover ‘26 and Breanna Perez ‘26. The senior class kept it interesting with a tight race for queen dramatically ending in a tie. Saturn Cooper ‘25 and Trioni Wright ‘25 both earned the title of homecoming queen. Kevin McGuire ‘25 was elected king.
When asked about how they felt about winning the homecoming queen in a tie, Cooper said, “I was surprised and happy because I didn’t think I was going to get it” and Wright exclaimed, “I feel appreciated and heard because I told people to vote for me and they did”
The night was a huge success, with students and guests having fun all night long. This year the student council sold a record number of tickets, reaching almost 220 tickets sold. Business teacher Rob Swierbitowicz said “I think everyone had a good time with a big turnout.” Sophomore Jonathan Briscoe ‘27 agrees with Swierbitowicz: “I had a very good time with my friends, and my favorite part was eating pizza and partying.”
Watch out everyone, McGuire says “I’m going two for two with prom king.”
