Derby High School athletics and Jersey Mike’s Subs have teamed up to recognize fall student athletes and give them Jersey Mike’s rewards. Every Friday, a fall student athlete is announced as a Jersey Mike’s “A Sub Above” player of the week and given a certificate for a free Jersey Mike’s sub. So far, 2 DHS students have been recognized.
Jersey Mike’s Subs reached out to high schools all over the country to introduce this program that is designed to support athletic directors, coaches and student athletes with Jersey Mike’s rewards. Players are then nominated by their coaches for their excellence performances in their games or meets from that week.
Soccer player Antione Chene-Paulin ‘25 was the first DHS student athlete to receive this award. After receiving this award, he said he was “very surprised” but says “It was a pleasure to be picked as the first athlete of the week out of all of the other great athletes.”
The second DHS Jersey Mike’s athlete of the week was captain of the volleyball team Brianna Kling ‘25. She also said she was surprised by receiving this award as well but she “felt accomplished.” She also added that the week she received this award was a hard week game-wise and receiving the recognition for this award “made a tough game-week better.”
Every Sunday, the six fall coaches at DHS nominate one player from their team to be up for nomination to become a Jersey Mike’s student athlete of the week.
Athletic Director Jennifer Moffat and her committee then decide who they choose as the Jersey Mike’s “a sub above” athlete of the week and then announce the winner that Friday.
