Derby Middle School assistant principal Tracey Quartiano was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time at the beginning of this school year. Shortly after receiving this news, Derby Middle School principal Rachael Caggiano created “Quartiano Strong” to honor her and donate money raised by the Derby school district to Seymour Pink, an organization that helps fight against breast cancer.
In an interview with Caggiano, she describes Quartiano Strong as “Our Derby family rallying around someone we care about in their time of need.” She also says, “It is a way to show Ms. Quartiano that she and anyone else fighting have a support system behind them no matter what.”
In an interview with Derby High School principal Jennifer Olsen, she explains that “Derby is a tight-knit family that comes together to support one another.” She also says that Ms. Quartiano “Has touched the lives of so many students throughout her career. This is a great way to give back to her.”
The Derby community held a District-Wide Pink Out Day on Wednesday, Oct. 23, in honor of Ms. Quartiano. On this day, students and teachers were encouraged to dress in all pink and could donate $1 to honor Ms. Quartiano. The proceeds collected were donated to Seymour Pink.
Caggiano explained that Quartiano is “Overwhelmed by the love and support shown for her and her family during this time.”
