On Tuesday Oct. 8 Derby High School students dressed up in matching outfits with a peer for twin day,  a very popular spirit week theme here for many years.

Student Body President Xariyah Mitchell ‘25 and Student Body Vice President Aliyah Chajchic ‘25, along with the Student Council Executive Board, came together and created an exciting and fun homecoming spirit week.

The spirit days were: Melting pot on Monday- represent your culture (Oct. 7), Twin day on Tuesday- Match with a friend or group (Oct. 8), Country vs Country club on Wednesday-  Dress in cowboy attire or country club ready (Oct. 9), Throwback Thursday on Thursday- Dress as your favorite decade (Oct. 10), Wear your class color on Friday- Freshmen in gray, sophomores in black, juniors in white, and seniors in red (Oct. 11). The finale to the fun-filled week came on Saturday Oct. 12, with the annual homecoming dance.

Twin day was selected to be a part of the homecoming spirit week when Mitchell and Chajchic jotted ideas down that they felt would interest students and get them in the school spirit. The student council executive board then analyzed the many fun ideas and narrowed them down to 5 days. “ I think twin day is a popular spirit day, so I do think it will be implemented again especially because of how easy it is to do (for students.)” Mitchell says. “ I think that twin day was honestly very successful, it was one of the most popular out of the whole week, most kids participated,” She added.

Many students in Derby High School felt as though twin day brought them together and was another opportunity to create memories with their peers. Nedaat Masiat and Sofia Rudus ‘26, dressed up as Minions, from the popular film Despicable me “ It allowed me to make new memories with my friends” Masiat says. “The twin day theme definitely made the school day more interesting and fun. It made me feel the school spirit and also really involved” Rudus said.

Students expressed that they enjoyed the twin day theme and would like to see it in spirit weeks to come. “Honestly, I would like to see this in another spirit week!” Kerwnny Jerome ’26 said.

“I would like to see Wacky Wednesday,” Rudus says. “ I would like to see Adam Sandler day again, I enjoyed it last year” Masiat expresses. “I want to see a cultural food day” Jerome says. After a fun-filled successful spirit week, students gave lots of feedback to themes they would like to see in future spirit weeks. With all the great ideas from students, upcoming spirit weeks are sure to be even more fun. DHS is excited to see what’s next.
