The first day of spirit week, “Melting Pot Monday,”  allowed students to represent their culture and where they came from by dressing up in traditional clothing and showing love for their country. On this day, Derby High School allowed students to express their culture by having this as a spirit week theme.

Some students shared their thoughts on what Melting Pot Monday means to them,  how it feels to represent their culture, and their opinion on others doing the same. Zanae Worgs ‘25 shares how she feels being able to represent where she is from: “It means everybody representing their culture. I think it was very special seeing all the different countries that everybody’s from and how we are together. You can see everybody else and where they are from. I think that was special. It felt special again, because being away from home is already something that is hard. So being able to show others that I’m from here is a really cool thing. It’s nice representing where you’re from, your beliefs, your culture.”

Everyone has their own opinion on how they feel about this spirit week theme, and what it means to them. Kevin Ferreira ‘25 says, “It means to me that you could go and represent your culture with the traditional clothes, or those around you can represent with what they wear or symbolizes their culture.” Melting Pot Monday was a day for students to show their pride in their culture and heritage; it showed how diverse the school community is.
