On Wednesday, Oct. 9, students at Derby High School took part in spirit week. On Wednesday, the theme was “Country Club vs. Western Wednesday.” For this theme, students and teachers around DHS were able to dress themselves according to the country club aesthetic or in a western outfit. Themed outfits were very popular among students from all grade levels. Students showed out and represented their chosen theme incredibly.
As this was the first spirit week of the year and the spirit week lead directly into the homecoming dance, many students were excited to dress up and showcase their country club or western style.

After speaking with students Nick Sheridan ‘25, Skylar Anderson ‘27, Jake Lebel ‘27, and Skylah Clarke ‘28 shared how they chose their outfits and their thoughts on the theme. Both Lebel and Clarke followed the western theme, while Sheridan and Anderson embraced the country club theme. When asked about why they chose their respective themes, the reasoning for each person was nearly the same. Clarke explains, “I had a really good idea on what to do for my outfit. I chose it instead of country club because country club didn’t really appeal to me and I didn’t know what to do for my outfit.” Similarly, Sheridan says, “I have a lot more country club clothes, and I’m going to be honest, this is what I wear on a normal summer day.” Many students chose their outfits based on what they already had at home.

When asked if Country Club vs. Western Wednesday was their favorite day of Spirit Week, the responses were again similar. Anderson shares, “Definitely, I was literally looking forward to this day since last week.” This is representative of the hype and excitement a spirit week can bring to the school. Lebel says, “I would say country club vs. country was in fact my favorite spirit week day so far.” Clarke also shares that Wednesday’s theme was her favorite and adds, “It was a very fun time seeing everyone’s outfit and how everyone’s ideas came together.”

It is safe to say that Country Club vs Western Wednesday was a big hit at DHS and students showcased their creativity through their outfits.
