For years, school food programs have gained attention for promoting healthier eating habits for students. Offering a mix of hot and cold food options has become an important way to meet students’ nutritional needs and preferences. DHS serves hot and cold meals for breakfast and lunch five days a week, and the menus affect students and the overall school environment.
One of the main reasons we have a big variety of hot and cold food options is to ensure the meals served are nutritious. Students are more likely to enjoy and eat meals that they find appealing. Whether they prefer a warm or cold meal, the school food department adjusts the menu to include what foods students like the best. Elmedina Tale from the food service department stated, “Based on what the kids like best is how the menu is created.” This not only boosts students’ mood: it reduces food waste as well. The lunch staff are open to receiving feedback from students during lunch periods. They have a bucket and students can write down meals that they would like to see on the school menu. This new school year, the lunch staff has been giving out new meals for the students including fish sticks, new style pizza , and many more. Every week there is a new meal that students can try out. The more students that love it , the more it will be served. It’s important for the food department to care about the food they serve so the students can enjoy their meal of the day.
“Being part of the staff , I can not ask for anything better”, stated Tale. The entire food service group has a friendly relationship with one another. They all get along with each other and spread positivity in the school. Students can bring their own lunches to school, as well. The school does not force anyone to receive a meal. Instead, the school respects those who bring their own lunch for personal reasons. Lunch is a chance for students to connect and enjoy their food together. This social aspect of eating can make lunch an important part of the school day.
The food choices in schools are becoming increasingly important. The introduction of hot and cold food menus in DHS has an impact on students’ health and social interactions. By focusing on nutrition, DHS creates an environment that promotes healthy eating and improves the overall school experience. As schools continue to adapt, the role of food in supporting student success will assist in the students well-being.
