Once again, this Thanksgiving the Derby High School NHS is asking the DHS community to give back for those in need during the holiday season. The NHS has been working hard by decorating boxes and creating flyers that can be seen throughout the DHS halls in preparation for their annual food drive.

The food drive is a tradition that has been going on for years in the Derby community. “I’ve been here for eighteen years and we’ve been doing it ever since,” said guidance counselor and National Honor Society co-leader Brian Nutcher.

Foods like cranberries, stuffing, mashed potatoes and vegetables are being collected throughout the halls. Students are encouraged to donate. The food collected from students and faculty are divided up and given to eight families from Derby High School. Nutcher explains that this drive is “supporting families that may not have the means to purchase a whole Thanksgiving meal around this time.”

The drive started on Nov. 14 and ended on Nov. 25. The food was delivered to eight families on Nov. 26, right before the holiday on Nov. 27.

Derby High School is also not the only school in this district that does a food drive like this. Derby Middle School has their own drive as well where they collect Thanksgiving sides and then give them to families from their school before the holiday. Bradley Elementary School helps out DHS by collecting food from students and staff at their school and then giving the food for us to give to our families.
