On November 25, the Derby girls’ powder puff team had an amazing win against the Oxford girl’s powder puff team, with the final score being 28-24. It all started with the practices two weeks before the game was being held. The hard work and commitment of the team everyday to practice led to their outstanding win against Oxford.

The girls started their first practices with offensive plays and then assigned positions to players in the following days. They put in the hard work at practice each day after school from 2 to 4. In doing this, they memorized their formations and plays easily. They also had their own team scrimmage, helping them run their plays against an actual defense, and preparing everyone to get in the game. This was very helpful for the team as Derby pulled away with the win in the powder puff game.

I talked to the MVP of the game Brianna Quiles’25 and she said, “Going into the powderpuff game I had high expectations for myself and the team because I was highly confident in my coach’s plays.” She felt very strongly about her performance, not only that she had confidence in herself, but also in her teammates and coaches. When playing a sport, trust between the team is very important in order to have chemistry on the field.

Quiles also said, “I felt the practices led to the games to the win against Oxford because we spent a lot of time practicing and perfecting plays to make us run them smoothly and also teaching us how to work with each other.” Finally, she remarks, “It feels pretty great being match MVP. Scoring 20 out of 28 points made me feel confident in my athleticism and happy with how I performed and with it being my last year, it was really nice to end the year on such a good note.” The Derby girls were very satisfied with how they performed and with winning the game entirely, but most of all, they liked having fun on that field that night.
