A student-run thrift shop organized by DHS Special Education teacher Shelly Sheridan and DHS social worker Nichole McKitty is coming to Derby High School on Oct. 17, 2025, giving students not only a useful resource but also hands-on experience in running a shop located in room 177A.
Sheridan and Principal Jennifer Olson explored the idea during the summer, which resulted in Sheridan uploading a project on DonorsChoose.org, a website where you can accept donations based on your project. The fundraising was completed in just a few days, with a total of $555.19 raised. Donations came from friends, relatives, and anonymous contributors. Sheridan felt it was a good, wonderful fortune, especially from strangers, allowing the school to purchase garment racks, cubbies, shoe racks, and other store items.
The new store will be carefully managed by a committed group of students. This shop will be a part of the school clubs. The idea is for it to serve as a resource for students, not just for the experience, but also for sorting and organizing.
McKitty thought it would be a good idea to help lead since she sees the students’ hardships and believes it will benefit the students. “Oftentimes, we see kids coming here, and we’re not really sure what they are able to access at home,” McKitty explained.
This brings new light to Derby High, providing students with a new area to take items for free while also allowing them to donate appropriate attire. It will also help with dress code, uniform difficulties, and seasonal changes. Sheridan stated, “There’s obviously a need for a shop, and now students or adults can help themselves.”

Overall, students said they’re looking forward to the thrift shop opening, and some are even stepping up to help run it. Students from Derby High School are demonstrating that even tiny initiatives can have a significant impact by launching the secondhand store. Donations will still be accepted throughout the year.
