This year’s homecoming theme, “A Night in Paris,” brought our school a little taste of France. Under the sparkling lights, students and staff enjoyed this school event, held outside of the classroom, with a record number of tickets sold and approximately half of the student body in attendance.

The senior homecoming king winner, Quincy Carter ‘26,  said the homecoming theme was cool and that “it was the best Hoco I’ve ever gone to, and I won Hoco king.” I also spoke with McKeon Gray ‘27, who said the decorations in the building showed the spirit of the evening. Gray mentioned, “Despite not having a proper DJ this year, our very own Butterworth did his best, taking our recommendations and making the dance memorable.” When asked about his opinion of the raffles and other special items, Gray said, “It helped to keep people intrigued through the night and added a new element to the spirit of Hoco.” The experience was a great night for everyone, and students are looking forward to next year.

I spoke with Derby High School social studies teacher and student council advisor Spenser Butterworth, who also served as the DJ at homecoming. When asked about the atmosphere of the dance, Butterworth said, “I think it was interesting having students come up with playlists and not having a DJ, but overall, it went well.” Student council members thought of offering prizes to make the dance more interactive, and Butterworth said, “people enjoyed the fact that they could possibly win their money back in some way, shape, or form.” Additional work on the playlist and games before the event would have been helpful. Overall, Butterworth thought “it was a good experience for students and staff.”

The student council’s dedication and hard work in preparing the gym for “A Night in Paris” created a memorable homecoming dance for all. The school spirit and interactions beyond the classroom highlighted the importance of our school community. With many memories made, students are eagerly anticipating next year’s Homecoming.
