There is an abundance of things to be grateful for, but I’m often so focused on the minuscule dents in my life that I forget how privileged I am to be living like this. It’s so easy to get caught up in the negative things that are happening to us that we can forget to appreciate all the good. It’s in our human nature to strive for more. While your current situation may not be ideal, I have a strong feeling that every conflict you’ve had in the past has found a way to work itself out now. I get so engrossed in my own issues that I forget how lucky I am to go to school, breathe without difficulty, and have a great support system.
My family is the most important thing in my life. No matter what I have going on, I know I can always come home to people who care about me unconditionally. Their support is what pushes me to do better and dream bigger. I’m the youngest in my family, and as I’m graduating and going off to college at the conclusion of this summer, it’s been settling in that this is the last time I’m going to be under the same roof as my siblings. This realization has turned even the most frustrating moments into ones that I know I’ll look back on and miss. When Sofia Rudus ‘26 and Skylah Clarke ‘28 were asked what they were most grateful for, they both said their family. “They’ve sacrificed so much for me, and I wouldn’t be anywhere without them,” said Clarke.

I am incredibly grateful for my friends. High school is a time of growth and change, and having people who grow alongside you makes all the difference. My friends have seen me at my worst and never judge me. They listen to my rants, celebrate my successes, and turn even the worst days into manageable ones.

Another blessing I often overlook is my health. Being able to wake up each morning, participate in activities, and simply breathe without struggle is something not everyone gets to experience. Good health gives me the freedom to pursue my goals and enjoy my life. It’s easy to take for granted because it feels so normal, but it’s a gift that so many people don’t receive.
Finally, I’m so beyond grateful for my right to education. The opportunity to attend school, learn from dedicated teachers, and prepare for my future is something so many people around the world don’t have access to. Education challenges me to think critically and discover what I’m passionate about. When assignments pile up and deadlines feel overwhelming, I sometimes wish that women never got the right to go to school. In all seriousness, there are so many women around the world who wish they could experience the same academic stress that I dread. This stress is rooted in privilege and opportunity, and I am so thankful.
There is so much suffering going on in the world. Someone else’s problems do not take away from the weight of your own. But reflecting on the good in your life can help make your problems feel a little smaller. The light at the end of the tunnel is far brighter when you stop focusing on the darkness. I hope this inspires you to make a list of things you’re grateful for!
