Almost three weeks after 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie was taken from her home in Tucson, Arizona, the investigation is still ongoing. Law enforcement continues to say the case is active, but as time passes without clear answers, it becomes harder for the public to stay focused. That is exactly why this case should not fade from attention.
According to Yahoo News, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said, “This remains an active investigation,” and added that hundreds of officers are “actively reviewing thousands of tips.” The FBI has also received more than 13,000 tips and is offering a $100,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. Those numbers show that effort is still being made behind the scenes.
At the same time, there have been multiple challenges. DNA from a glove found about two miles from Guthrie’s home did not match anything in the FBI’s database. Investigators are now looking into genealogical leads. Authorities have also reviewed possible ransom notes demanding millions of dollars in bitcoin, although at least one of those notes was confirmed to be fake, according to BBC News.
Pima County police released surveillance footage of a masked and armed suspect outside Guthrie’s home the night she disappeared. Blood found on her porch was confirmed to be hers. Her doorbell camera was removed during the night, and her pacemaker app disconnected from her phone at 2:28 a.m. Officials believe she was taken against her will.
Sheriff Chris Nanos has also made it clear that the family is not involved. He stated that “all siblings and spouses” have been cleared. In an interview with the BBC, he said, “I just believe she’s somewhere here locally. I don’t know why.” That statement shows both hope and uncertainty, which is what this case has felt like from the beginning.
Because Nancy Guthrie is the mother of NBC anchor Savannah Guthrie, the case has received national attention. Savannah has made several public appeals asking for her mother’s return. In one message reported by the BBC, she said, “It is never too late to do the right thing.” In another, she said, “We need to know without a doubt that she is alive.” Those statements show the emotional reality behind the headlines.
However, attention should not depend on whether someone is connected to a public figure. Every missing person deserves urgency and consistent coverage. Just because weeks have passed does not mean the case is less serious.
As time goes on, it becomes easier for people to see updates as just another news story. But for the Guthrie family, this is not just news. An elderly woman who may not have access to her medication is still missing. That fact alone should keep this case at the front of people’s minds. An active investigation should not turn into background noise. Until Nancy Guthrie is found and answers are given, the public should continue paying attention. Time passing does not make a disappearance less important.
