On Tuesday, May 5, Derby High School and Griffin Hospital united to create a field trip for students to experience what healthcare is really about. This field trip was a great opportunity for students who are considering healthcare in their future and want to learn more about it.

Once at Griffin Hospital, each student received an exploration visitor pass sticker and was split into groups of six. Shelton High School students also joined Derby during this trip. Each group had one Griffin employee escorting them to each department of the hospital. The departments included nursing, radiology, wound care, physical therapy, sleep technology and respiratory care. At each department, an active worker explained how the major works, where students could go to school to specialize in that department and answered any other questions students may have.

Students spent about 20-30 minutes at each department. After all of the groups finished visiting each department, everyone reunited in the cafeteria for lunch. Griffin provided food for all students. After a long day, the directors of the hospital asked everyone what their thoughts on the trip were and what their favorite part was.

Roman Sowell ’27 said, “I think that the trip was fun and interesting. We got a lot of insight on the hospital.” Both Derby and Shelton High School students were able to learn different points of view and think more about whether healthcare is the best option for them. “It’s very nice seeing the hospital and its specific sections that a regular person would never end up seeing,” stated Alison Echeverria-Soto ’26.

This trip was a great experience and an even better opportunity for students who may still be undecided about their future to gain a new experience and think outside the box.
