Derby High School’s  Honor Society Induction Ceremony is held annually, towards the end of the school year, to induct new members and recognize returning members of each society. The societies include National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Italian Honor Society and Tri-M Honor Society. The ceremony is held in the auditorium with a large audience full of families of the members. The ceremony is run by Derby High School Guidance Counselors Jennifer Ostrosky and Brian Nutcher, as well as Derby High School Language & Fine Arts teachers. The ceremony is a way to show appreciation to how hard the students work, and is a wonderful event that everyone looks forward to every year.

The honor society induction ceremony takes a lot of planning and preparation. Students and staff practice their speaking parts and how to line up properly during advisory periods. Ostrosky comments on this preparation along with positive comments about the ceremony, “It’s a really special ceremony and over the years we have tried to make it even more special. We invite all the current members and the officers that attend to recognize the new inductees. It is great to see everyone a part of that.” To become members of any society, students must show strong scholastic achievements, however each society has different requirements.

Most importantly, students are the ones in charge of these societies as a board of executives are voted on in the beginning of the year, at least for National Honor Society, to run events and fundraisers either individually or with the whole society. These societies help within the community and within our school. It is a great achievement to have and allows students to find genuine ways to give back. The ceremony celebrates each of these students and their potential, future, and past accomplishments.
